DEFICIENCIES OF ADAPTATION OF PASTURE LEGUMES

L.R. HUMPHREYS

Abstract

Deficiencies in the adaptation of pasture legumes to diverse tropical farming situations are discussed. Resistance to heavy grazing is described in terms of responses to treading and to defoliation; resistance arises from avoidance, continued cycles of seedling regeneration, maintenance of high growth rate despite defoliation, longevity and survival of stress. Reference is also made to the problems of fire, mineral excess and flooding.
